Zovirax 200mg tablets are a prescription medicine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline UK. It is an antiviral medication which can prevent viruses from growing or replicating in the body. The Herpes virus responds well to Zovirax 200mg, and so the medicine is often prescribed to alleviate symptoms of infections caused by the Herpes virus. It may also help to reduce pain, itching, and discomfort associated with Herpes-related blisters.

How Zovirax Works

Zovirax 200mg tablets contain 200mg of the active ingredient Acyclovir. The human body transforms Acyclovir into Acyclovir Triphosphate which can prevent a natural process called polymerisation from occurring. Polymerisation is the process by which viruses develop strong networks throughout the body, helping them to grow. By inhibiting this process, the virus cannot replicate, reducing associated symptoms.

Zovirax Uses

Zovirax 200mg is often used to treat:

• Chicken pox
• Shingles
• Cold sores
• Genital Herpes
• Other Herpes simplex infections
• Infections in the immunocompromised (eg. those with HIV)

While Zovirax 200mg tablets will not cure Herpes, it can stop symptoms from returning.

Zovirax Dosage

The dosage for Zovirax 200mg tablets will vary depending on why the medicine has been prescribed. For cold sores and genital Herpes, the standard dose is one tablet per day. However, it may be advised to take four tablets per day for chicken pox or shingles. It is important to take Zovirax 200mg exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Zovirax 200mg tablets should be started as soon as possible after symptoms first appear. The tablets can be swallowed whole by mouth, or dissolved in water if this is easier.

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. However, if it is closer to the time of the next dose, skip and take the next dose as normal. Do not take two doses.

Zovirax Side Effects

Zovirax 200mg is generally considered to be safe when taken as prescribed. However, as with many medications, some patients may experience mild side effects, including:

• Dizziness or feeling faint
• Nausea or vomiting

• Photosensitivity
• Tiredness and fatigue
