Aygestin 5mg tablets are a prescription medicine that’s categorised as a female hormonal treatment. It mimics the behaviour of a natural hormone, progesterone, which is responsible for regulating ovulation and menstruation in women. The medicine is often used to treat abnormal vaginal bleeding, either easing very heavy periods, or triggering menstruation in women who have stopped bleeding without cause.

How Aygestin Works

Aygestin 5mg tablets contain 5mg of the active ingredient Norethindrone Acetate. Norethindrone Acetate is derived from Norethindrone; a synthetic form of the progesterone hormone that’s known as progestin. Introducing greater levels of progesterone into the body can prevent normal growth of the uterine lining to reduce heavy blood flow, and stimulate hormones to restore normal menstruation activities.

Aygestin Uses

Aygestin 5mg is often used to treat:

• Endometriosis
• Amenorrhea
• Painful periods
• Heavy periods
• Abnormal uterine bleeding
• Hormonal imbalances in women

Aygestin Dosage

Aygestin 5mg tablets will be prescribed as different doses – and for different lengths – depending on what the medicine is being used to treat. For heavy or painful periods, the typical dose is once daily for 5-10 days prior to menstruation. For endometriosis, the typical dose is once daily for 6-9 months. It is important to take Aygestin 5mg tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than is recommended.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is closer to the time of the next dose. If so, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose of the medicine.

Aygestin 5mg tablets can be taken with or without food. However, taking the medicine during a meal, or shortly after eating, may help to reduce the risk of stomach upset.

Aygestin Side Effects

Aygestin 5mg is generally considered to be safe when taken as prescribed. However, as with many medications, some patients may experience mild side effects including:

• Fluid retention
• Bloating
• Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
• Weight increase or decrease
• Acne
• Breast tenderness
• Breast enlargement
• Headache
• Mood swings
• Insomnia
• Nausea
• Visual disturbances

Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after stopping Aygestin 5mg tablets. This is normal, but always discuss with your doctor if you are concerned.
